Beauty Product Review

I admit to being a creature of habit with my beauty routine, but I also love trying new products. At any given moment, there is a continuous and constant revolving door of new trends and products to overload the able-bodied consumer. Admittedly, I’m one of those aforementioned consumers. I’m a sucker for trying new products, in the event it might become a game changer in my beauty routine. I don’t know how you ladies fare, but I can lose myself in the aisles of a drug store for hours. The same holds true for ULTA or any department store loaded with the ambitious promise of youth and beauty. Hence, I’ve culled some new contenders for review as well as items that are consistently on rotation in my beauty cabinet. Here is my beauty product review and how they measured up to my lofty expectations.

Product: Simple Micellar Water. I was fortunate enough to find this item at Costco, which was a total score, but it’s also sold in local drugstores. A 6oz bottle will cost around $7 to $8. I have very sensitive skin and was hesitant to try it, but heard good things regarding micellar water, so I took the plunge. All I can say is I was pleasantly surprised at how well this makeup remover did the job while also making my skin feel nice and hydrated. You have to be a little careful around the eyes as it can sting if it accidentally gets into your eyes. This is supposed to remove all makeup without having to rinse your face with water. I did, however, follow up with my tried and true Erno Laszlo deep sea cleansing mud bar. (That is my all time favorite cleansing bar)

Why you need it: It’s an easy and gentle cleanser that leaves your skin feeling soft, clean and hydrated. This cleansing water literally pulls dirt from your pores because that’s what micelles do; they attract oil and dirt. If you have sensitive skin, do not fret…micellar water is your friend! It is free of artificial dyes, perfumes, or chemicals that could irritate the skin and is also packed with skin loving vitamins, B and C to be exact. And the reasonable price point won’t put a dent in your pocketbook.

Product: AmorePacific Enzyme Treatment. Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask. Exfoliation of dead skin cells is the precursor for radiant and smooth skin and who doesn’t want skin that looks refreshed and vibrant? This particular enzyme exfoliator from AmorePacific is a Korean beauty favorite and was introduced to me by my mother, a woman who has perfect porcelain skin.  PTR Pumpkin Enzyme Mask works by exfoliating the skin with pumpkin enzyme and alpha hydroxy acids, which causes skin to peel, thus revealing more youthful and radiant skin. I found this gem at Costco for less than $40, which was a savings of $20 off regular retail price.

Why you need it: AmorePacific Enzyme Treatment is an exfoliator for all skin types that is gentle enough for daily use. It is formulated with papaya enzymes and will cost you $60. Your skin will be smoother and more radiant immediately after use. My skin always looks brighter, more refreshed, and youthful after using this product! The wonderful positive about this exfoliator is being able to use it everyday. Most exfoliating products are too harsh for daily use, making this item a stand out.

Peter Thomas Roth’s Pumpkin Enzyme Mask is a mask you only want to use one to two times per week because it’s a stronger mask due to the AHA’s. The three key ingredients are pumpkin enzyme, alpha hydroxy acids, and aluminum oxide crystals. These crystals are the same crystals used in microdermabrasion. As soon as I applied the mask, I could smell the pumpkin and felt a slight cooling sensation. I really liked the gel consistency of this product. Perhaps that’s why I felt it was soothing and cooling on my skin. After I rinsed it off, my skin felt very soft and had a definite glow to it. I would say it’s worth the money if you want skin that looks brighter, feels softer and is more hydrated. Many spas offer pumpkin facials, so why not save some money and do it at home? I would definitely buy this product again!

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

Product: Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse.  Oribe has established itself as the premier product line for beautifully styled hair. At $38 a bottle, it’s a bit on the pricier side, but once you try a product from this fabulous line, you will be hooked.

Why you need it: I have very fine hair and this mousse gives my hair bombshell volume like you wouldn’t believe without weighing it down. My hair feels thicker and fuller simply from a golf-ball sized pump of product. I tend to think all Oribe products are liquid gold in a bottle! The fabulous scent lingers in your hair and smells delicious for days, even without washing your hair. The only downside with this product is once you start using it, you will want to purchase your next bottle before running out. Ladies with fine hair, this is your hair salvation!

Product: Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. Oribe Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray.  Olaplex No.3 Olaplex at home treatment is a leave in treatment to help strengthen your strands in between salon visits. This is especially important for girls like me who overly process and strip their hair. It helps to fortify the protein bonds of the hair. All you have to do is apply to wet hair and leave in for 15-20 min and wash it out. Oribe Texture Spray adds instant volume to your hair and can also be used as a dry shampoo. It refreshes and revitalizes limp dull hair. Beach babes and island girls can rejoice with Oribe Beach Wave Spray. This product gives you beachy waves without the crunch of salty stiffness.

Why you need it: If your strands are weak and prone to breakage from over-processing, you need Olaplex in your life because it is a bonafide game changer. This is not a leave conditioner. This is a reparative product because it literally fixes broken hair by mending the protein bonds. What?!? I know what you’re thinking….your BS meter is going off big time, right? Wrong!! This stuff works and allows me to continue to bleach my tresses, balayage my ends, blow dry, and curl my hair with every known curling iron in my arsenal. This product is the bomb. It’s not as potent as the salon version, but rest assured it works.

Oribe Beach Wave and Shine Spray is a beach babe’s dream. I love this product to hold my curls and create that messy texture without crunchiness. You can use it on wet hair to create curls or spray it on the ends of your strands like I do to create messy, tousled, textured beach hair. It’s one of my go-to’s.

Now let’s talk about the holy grail of products: Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray…Oh Em Gee!! I have been using this product for about five years and am a devoted fan. It pains me whenever I run out and have to purchase another bottle because of the price tag, but it’s beyond worth it. This product gives you full blown glamorous hair with texture. This is the ultimate multi-tasking product because you can spray it on your roots as a dry shampoo, use it as a spray for sexy texture, or as a holding spray. I love what this spray does: it builds volume, texture, and absorbs excess oils from your scalp. What’s not to love about this product? Absolutely nothing. It is simply phenomenal!

Olaplex No.3, Oribe Texture Spray, Oribe Beach Spray…the trifecta

Product: Herbivore Botanicals Blue Clay Detoxifying MaskThis is a detoxifying clay mask that reduces blemishes and detoxes the skin. This product is more suited toward oilier skin types, but can be used by other skin types prone to blemishes. It’s primary use is for spot treatment, but can also be used as an all-over mask.

Why you need it: If you’re looking for a quick fix and detox, this product is your go-to. It’s a do it yourself product in the sense you mix it into a paste with a drop or two of water. The smell is amazingly clean, refreshing and will reinvigorate your senses. Herbivore has an entire line of all natural beauty products I am more than eager to test out. I used this as a full face mask and it literally pulled all the oil and grime from my face. As a result, I definitely needed to add some much needed hydration back into my skin. It’s a product I would probably only use once or twice a month, but for spot treatment, it’s ideal. Final verdict on this product: it does exactly what it’s supposed to do by drawing out all the oils and toxins from your skin.

Love the clean lines of the packaging

Product: Yes To Coconut  lotion. I bought this item because I saw the Allure seal of approval and thought I would give it a try. This body lotion was purchased at my local Walgreens for less than $5.

Why you need it: This lotion made Allure’s “Best Of” list, and it’s not without good merit. For those with dry skin needing the extra moisture, but don’t want a heavy greasy moisturizer, this is your product. If you love coconut, it’s also another reason to buy this lotion. I like that it’s lightweight, doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy, and makes my skin feel hydrated. I also like the fact you can spray it directly onto your skin. Consequently, it’s well worth the $4 and change investment.

Product: La Mer Creme De La Mer. Creme de La Mer is another holy grail of products I cannot live without. I live and breathe Creme de La Mer and have been using it religiously for several years. This product has a cult following for a reason because it works!

Why you need it: CDLM is the stuff of legends. If I have an irritation or a blemish on my face, I use La Mer and it seems to instantly soothe my skin. My skin soaks it up and immediately looks hydrated and revitalized. Am I overselling La Mer? If you try it, you will be as devoted a fan as I. It’s not called the “miracle broth” for not. The regenerating serum, eye cream, and original cream will all change the texture, tone, and vibrancy of your skin. It’s pricey, but a little goes a long way with this product. However, if you’re going to splurge on a product in the La Mer line up, I always recommend the original Creme De La Mer. I have been using it for over 20 years, and as a result, have yet to do any laser treatments, filler, or any other skin rejuvenating treatments other than Botox. Not that I haven’t thought about it…just haven’t felt the need to go that route….just yet.

Armed with an arsenal of La Mer
